New Studies on Horizon

 

The ALS Association is supporting two new exciting stem cell research efforts.  These efforts include a new federal grant program designed to expand the field of research into the potential of stem cell therapy to treat and cure neurological disorders and disease and a new study led by investigators at the University of Wisconsin.  The first stem cell therapy to treat and cure neurological disorders and disease and a new study led by investigators at the University of Wisconsin.  The first stem cell program supported by ALSA is being administered by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.  The second project supported by ALSA will be carried out at the Waisman Center, University of Wisconsin and will use neural stem cells as a delivery system for trophic factors. 

The ALS Association is co-sponsoring a clinical trail of Insulin Growth Factor, IGF-1 (Myotrophin).  Enrollment is scheduled to begin at several centers in late winter 2002. 

The next phase of the Gulf War Study is funded and in its early stages.  This part of the study evaluates environments and other exposures that veterans with ALS experienced.
