The Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) has announced that on July 1, 2001, ALS patients will not have to wait twenty-four months before receiving their Medicare Benefits. ALL Social Security Offices (SSA) have been notified of this new change. From this point forward, when an individual with ALS is approved for SSA benefits, those will include Medicare benefits. This still takes five months after meeting the criteria for disability.
