ALS / Kelly AFB...Is There a Connection?

The South Texas Chapter of The ALS Association as of September 6, 2001, has received 117 questionnaires that have been completed by individuals/families who have worked or lived at Kelly AFB and have been diagnosed with ALS.  The chapter has turned them over to the epidemiologists at Brooks AFB in San Antonio who will coordinate two studies.  The first study is a twenty-year worker mortality study.  An independent investigating team, Applied Epidemiology Inc., has been awarded the contract for the mortality study.  Dr. Kenneth Mundt will lead the team.

A second study, a case series, will use data from the questionnaires given to the Air Force by the South Texas Chapter.  Background work has begun, but none of the families have yet been contacted.

The South Texas Chapter and the National ALS Association continues to meet with the Air Force, San Antonio Metropolitan Health District, Texas Department of Health and others, as observers to the studies that will be conducted.
