ALS Tissue Donation:

How to Participate

Recently, several ALS families in South Texas have requested information on tissue donation at the time of death.  There are currently five programs in the United States that collect and store brain and spinal cord tissue from persons who have died of ALS.  Because the tissue is collected and stored under carefully controlled conditions, it provides a vital resource for scientific research into the cause and cure of ALS.  The programs make samples available to researchers across the country.

Most families who have donated this tissue have explained that such a donation provides them with comfort at this time of great loss. Family members, must too, give approval for tissue donation.

Since the collection of tissue must be done in a timely manner, it is important for the ALS family to learn about and discuss the options with the scientists who have developed the programs and protocols.  If you are interested in this program or seeking additional information, please call our office at 1-(877)-ALS-HOPE or (210) 733-5204.  Tissue donation is a precious gift!
